Gateway to Intelligence...ya think
Gateway to intelligence: This is what greeted everyone upon arrival. Ya think it commands intelligence?

  Aussies
The Upsetters backed an Aussie band — like a U.S.O. show, only better!

More graphic evidence of entertainment!

  Bass Player
Ronny Bowers, the ever excellent base player for the Upsetters.

  A meal with friends
Here we were enjoying a typical meal at home (we made use of the army mess kits, that’s for sure!. Note the bottle of medicine on the left side of the table.

  Hayshida
...one of our roomies, Roy Hayashida. Nice guy!

  Relaxing
Relaxing in Phu Bai:
I think these were 054’s. drinking was the favorite past time. 058’s didn’t do THIS!

After a hard day of dits
Mike Hammel Relaxing:
Boy, life is tough here in Phu Bai!  We ( I, Mike Hammel, anyway ) always needed a bit of relaxing after a “bad hair day”.

WebMasters note: This room looks too clean!

  The Upsetters
The Upsetters:
My band, the Upsetters. Rob Balch on Drums, Norm Seifert on lead guitar, Ron bowers, bass and Dave Muse lead singer ( I don’t know who the guy in the forefront is ). We did tours around Phu Bai and many of the marine camps in the area. Now this is a GOOD band.

  Tough Mid-shift
Tough mid shift: one of the many casualties of the war!! (Drunker than a monkey).

  monkey
054’s mascot monkey: And they say they can teach a monkey (and women) to copy ditties. Bull!!! This little guy drank his share!! I don’t remember who had him, but he was sure different.

  protecting the 058
Protecting the 058: This was the way we killed two VC with one stone (two birds with one stone??) If our music didn’t get them, our 45’s did!

  Joyner
Joyner in Phu Bai. Joyner was at Ft.Devens when we were there and it was really neat to see him again in Phu Bai a year plus, later. I think he got busted at Devens for something, but don’t remember.

an 058 fantasy mural by Tony Duda -DETAIL
058 Fantasy mural: Our room was dull and typical of the boring room. To liven it up, we hired Tony Duda, our rhythm guitarist to paint a mural of our dreams. ( Payment was as much as he could drink-probably a mistake — I think we went thru 2 cases of JD Black. ) This is Ken Hines doing his part to touch it up when Tony was too drunk to continue.
