R.R.M. (Bob) Carpenter Jr. (1915-1990) played football and baseball at Tower Hill School in Wilmington, went on to earn a football letter at Duke University, helped found the Delaware High School All-Star football classic and was president of the Philadelphia Phillies during the baseball team's most successful era.

A trustee at the University of Delaware from 1945 until his death, he supported Blue Hen athletics and Delaware students generally for more than 50 years.

A tribute was paid to Bob Carpenter by former head football coach, athletic director and dean of the College of Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation David M. Nelson, now deceased. It reads, in part:

"The continuity and consistency we've enjoyed in Delaware's sports program have been the invaluable gifts of Bob Carpenter. He has been the one thread woven through the fabric of Delaware intercollegiate athletics over the last 50 years. People have come and gone at the University-from coaches and critics to trustees and presidents-but the one common demonimator in Delaware's athletic tradition since 1940 has been Bob Carpenter."

Bob Carpenter brought honor and distinction to the University of Delaware, his adopted alma mater, for more than half a century. It was with pride and enthusiasm that the Board of Trustees of the University named the "jewel in the crown of the University sports complex" in honor of R.R.M. (Bob) Carpenter-trustee, educator, sports enthusiast, conservationist and benefactor.
